Bird Box Monitoring

USI has maintained and monitored bird boxes since 1973, and I currently coordinate the monitoring effort with Professor Emeritus Jim Bandoli.  Our efforts monitoring boxes during the campus closure due to COVID-19 were featured as part of USI's Screagles Fly Together series, and featured again recently in the USI Pott College Newsletter.  This project has given us insights into how nesting behavior changes with weather and climate changes in southern Indiana.  Students who are interested in monitoring bird boxes should contact me!

Chickadees

Carolina Chickadees and Eastern Bluebirds don't usually share boxes, but in this instance, the chickadees kicked out the bluebird parents after they had laid some eggs, then laid their own eggs and incubated both. As a result, the chickadee parents raised two baby chickadees and one bluebird chick! You can read more about this story in this Evansville Courier and Press article. (Photo by Jim Bandoli)
