Background Info:

I am a Cultural Anthropologist with a geographic focus on Latin America. I have ongoing ethnographic research projects in coastal Ecuador and Amazonian Peru. My research focuses on rural lifeways and my interests include indigenous politics, development and identity, cultural ecology and resource use, and tourism and culture change. Some of my recent publications include articles in The Applied Anthropologist, EthnologyJournal of Latin American Cultural Studies, Expedition, The Journal of Ecological Anthropology and the Delaware Review of Latin American Studies. My recent book is titled Identity, Development, and the Politics of the Past and is available through the University Press of Colorado.

My teaching interests include topical courses on Latin America as well as courses on ethnographic methods. My goal is to encourage students to ask questions about the world in which they live and to inspire them to seek out answers. Courses I have taught include: Intro to Cultural Anthropology, Peoples of Latin America, Ethnography, Cultural Ecology, and History of Anthropological Thought. I have also taught numerous seminar courses including Indigenous Movements and Representations in Latin America, Identity, Culture, and Power, Development and Anthropology, Colonialism and Culture, and The Amazon.

In addition to my teaching and research interests, I am the Founder, President, and Project Coordinator of a 501c3 NGO that focuses on rural development and education in Ecuador. Through this work, I have had the opportunity to collaborate with wonderful people on a variety of projects including the construction of a water system at a rural school, the construction of additional classrooms at two rural schools, and an ongoing project to provide monthly food subsidies to elderly residents in need.
